Walter Black Foods acquired the firm Johnstone Baird & Co in the 1930s to delve into export markets, and still to this day ships this range of premium quality sauces around the globe.

From Humble Beginnings to a Leading Food Manufacturer

The Formation of Walter Black (Gold Star)

At the end of the 19th century a young Walter Black uprooted from rural Aberdeenshire and headed to Glasgow in search of work and a new life. Initially trading whatever was available, he quickly found that food products were a rewarding trading area. It was then he decided to start a food manufacturing company and so Walter Black (Gold Star) was formed in 1901. The development of corner shops evolved and so they began to be serviced with deliveries using horse and cart.

Aquisition of Johnstone Baird & Co

Local competitors were bought over also. Around 1930 Johnstone Baird & Co, based in Glasgow, were acquired as they had an export side. The supply of manufactured products were now on their way to many British Colony countries. With the influx of foreign traders and entrepreneurs, Fish and chip shops, ice cream parlours and cafes were quickly opening up, not just in Glasgow, but throughout Scotland. The business evolved and adapted to be able to supply as many of their needs as possible. What could be manufactured was manufactured, what could not, would be bought in and sold on. Replacing the horse and cart with motor vehicles meant quicker and larger deliveries could be made.

Leadership Transition

In December of 1941 Walter Black had a heart attack and died. His son, also called Walter (2) was called back from national service to take over the running of the business. His son, also called Walter (3), came into business in 1962 and they worked hard together to develop the business. Moving into supplying wholesalers, cash and carry’s and then supermarkets. A move into larger and more suitable premises in 1990 enabled the company to continue its development. Achieving 100 years in business in 2001 and being in a position to supply many of their products in own-label formats.
